  • 7 fish landing centres - Daman has 5 and Diu has 2.
  • There are 22 marine fisheries villages - Diu district has 17 and Daman has 5.
  • 5,278 fishermen families - Diu has 78% and Daman district has 22% of the fishermen families.
  • The total marine fisher folk population is 29,305 out of which adult male constitute 30.6%, adult female 30.2% and children 39.2%.
  • District wise analysis of the fisher folk population shows that in Diu district it is 79% and in Daman 21%.
  • Average fishermen population per village is about 1332 and family size is 5.6.
  • 26% of the fishermen population in the U.T. of Daman & Diu have primary education, 25% secondary, 7% above secondary and 42% have no formal education.
  • The number of fisher folk engaged in actual fishing is 5,868 forming 20% of the total fishermen population.
  • Out of 5,868 fisher folk engaged in actual fishing, 95.4% engaged in fulltime fishing, 3.3% part-time and 1.3% occasional fishing.
  • Out of 7,549 fisher folk occupied in the fishery activities 78% are active fishermen and 21% are engaged in other activities such as marketing, repairing / making nets, curing / processing, peeling, labourer and other allied activities. The remaining 1% are engaged in other activities not related to fishery.
  • Out of 5,278 fishermen families in the U.T. 1.3% belong to SC/ST. Majority of the families are Hindus (99.8%).
  • In the U.T. 1,427 fishing crafts are in the fishery out of which 39% are mechanized, 46% motorized and the remaining 15% are non-motorized crafts. In the mechanized crafts 56% are trawlers, 30% are gill netters, 12% are dolnetters and the remaining 2% form others.
  • Out of 862 fishing crafts owned by the fishermen of the U.T. 58% are mechanized, 22% are motorized and the remaining 20% are non-motorized.
  • Among the mechanized, 50% are trawlers, 35% are gill netters and 14% are dolnetters. The remaining 1% comprises others.
  • Among the motorized sector, fibre glass boat forms 99%, 1% are dugout canoes.
  • In non-motorized sector, 71% are dugout canoes and 29% form others boats.
  • Number of gill nets in the U.T. is given as number of pieces. About 53,486 pieces of gillnets are owned by fisher folk.
  • About 78 fishermen families possess Electronic gadgets and 105 families possess life saving equipment. Two fishermen families acquired training in the field of aquaculture and allied fields in the U.T.
  • Nearly 74% of the fisher folk possess neither craft nor gear.
  • In the U.T. 99.79% of the fishermen houses are pucca houses.
  • There about 34 Primary Schools, 14 Secondary Schools, 1 College and 3 Technical Institutions in the fishing villages.
  • All the fishing villages in the U.T. of Daman & Diu are electrified and connected by road, 90% of villages have bus stations.
  • There about 10 ice factories in the fishing villages.
