There are in all 34 landing centers in Goa. Number of landing centers in South Goa district is 21 and North Goa district has 13 landing centers.
There are 39 marine fishing villages in Goa. South Goa district has 26 fishing villages and North Goa district has 13 fishing villages.
Goa has1963 fishermen families. South Goa district has the maximum number (17%). North Goa has 29%
The total marine fisher folk population in the state is 10668 out of which adult male constitute 38%, adult female 35% and children 27%
District wise analysis of the fisher folk population shows that the maximum number is in South Goa district (69%) and remaining 31% belongs to North Goa.
Average fishermen population per villages is about 274 and family size is 5.4
16% of the fishermen population in the State of Goa acquired primary education, 43% secondary, 10 % above secondary and 31 % have no formal education.
The number of fisher folk engaged in actual fishing is 2515 forming 24% of the total fishermen population.
Out of 6399 fisher folk occupied in the fishery activities 39% are active fishermen and 53% are engaged in other activities such as marketing, repairing / making nets, curing, processing , peeling, labourer and other allied activities. The remaining 8% are engaged in other activities not related to fishery.
Out of 1963 fishermen families in the state of Goa, majority of the families are Hindus (62%), followed by the Christians (37%) and Muslim constitute the rest (1%). There are no fishermen families belong to SC/ ST category.
About 3% fisher folk have membership in fisheries and other Co operatives Societies
In Goa, 2551 fishing craft are in the fishery out of which 43% are mechanized, 36% motorized and the remaining 21% are non-mechanized crafts. In the mechanized crafts 76% are trawlers, 18% are purse-seiners, and 5% are gillnetters and the remaining 1% from others.
Out of 1.831 fishing crafts are owned by the fishermen of Goa.21% is mechanized, 51% are motorized and the remaining 28% are non motorized.
Among the mechanized, 65% are trawlers, 22% are purse-seiners, 12% are gillnetters .The remaining 1% comprise others.
In non motorized sector, 64% are plank-built boats and 36% are dugout.
Important gears of Goa are gillnets, trawl nets and drift nets. Sharing pattern of gears was more visible in shore seiners. Number of gillnets in Goa is given as number of pieces .About 26,348 pieces of gillnet are owned by the fishermen.
About 181 fishermen families possess electronic gadgets and 43 families possess life saving equipment.
Nearly 21% of the fisher folk possess neither crafts no gear.
In Goa 28% of the fishermen houses are Kutcha houses and 72% are pucca houses.
There about 146 Primary schools, 87 secondary schools, 20 Colleges and 12 Technical Institutions in the fishing villages.
30 fishing villages in the State are electrified and connected by road, 29 villages have bus stop/stand
