There are 222 marine fishing villages in Kerala. Trivandrum district has the maximum (42) and Kannur district the minimum (11). The total number of fishermen households was 120,486 in which the maximum households were in Trivandrum district (28%) and the minimum in Kasargod district (4%). Marine fishermen population in Kerala was 602,234 adult male constituting 35.5%, adult female 35.5 % and children 29 % of the population. Average population per village was 2, 713 and the average family size was 5. Fishermen concentration was higher in Malappuram district and lower in Kollam district. SIFFS has been conducting sea safety outreach programs for its member fishermen on the west coast in Kanniyakumari, Trivandrum, Kollam and the Malabar Region. The programs were interactive and reached out to over 20 fishing villages on the west coast in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A wide range of safety equipment, suitable for carriage in small boats, was demonstrated to fishermen during the outreach programs. Key issues like affordability, space limitations in small boats etc were also discussed.
Accidents were recorded, analysed and discussed during the workshops. Issues concerning search and rescue responses made by fishermen and the coast guard also came under discussion. Various risks and dangers experienced by fishermen came to light and a safety kit was developed for small boats, based on the feedback from the outreach programs.
As a culmination of the village level outreach programs, a state level seminar on sea safety was held at Trivandrum on 25 July 2005. It was attended by representatives of the Department of Fisheries, the Coast Guard, the Marine Enforcement Wing of the Kerala Police, small scale fishermen leaders and fishermen.
On July 11 2006, SIFFS established Suraksha, a store where subsidized sea safety equipment, capable of being carried in small boats, can be bought by fishermen. The store was set up in Anjuthengu (Anjengo), a fishing village in Trivandrum, Kerala.
