  • There are in all 352 landing centres in Tamilnadu. Maximum number of landing centres are in Ramanathapuram distrit(80)
  • There are 581 marine fishing villages in Tamilnadu. Ramanathapuram district has the maximum number of fishing villages(180) and Thirunelveli has the minimum(9)
  • The State has 192,152 fishermen families. Ramanathapuram district has the maximum number(20.2%) and Thiruvarur district has the minimum(1.5%). Kanyakumari district comes second(19.5%) followed by Nagapattinam(11.8%), Chennai(9.8%), Tuticorin(9.7%), Cuddalore(6.7%), Thiruvallur(5%), Kanchipuram(4%), Thanjavur(3.7%), Pudukkottai(3.5%), Villupuram(2.3%) and Thirunelveli district(2.3%)
  • The total marine fisherfolk population in the state is about 7.9 lakh out of which adult male constitute 35%, adult female 33% and children 32%.

Capsize (30%), Engine failure (24%), Surf crossing (18%), Onboard injuries (9%), Collisions (5%) and Falls overboard ( 5%) form 91% of the most numerous accidents in the small scale fishery of Tamil Nadu from 2000 to 2007. A sea safety project for increasing awareness among artisanal fishermen in the tsunami affected districts of Nagapattinam and Cuddalore got underway in January 2006. The project is funded by the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the South Indian Federation of Fishermen Societies (SIFFS), the largest NGO working among artisanal fishermen in South India. The Tamil Nadu Sea Safety Project for small boat fishermen

A sea safety awareness/training project funded by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, Government of Tamil Nadu under Asian Development Bank’s Tsunami Emergency Assistance Project, implemented by the South Indian Federation of Fishermen Societies (SIFFS), directly targeting over 30,000 active, sea-going, small boat fishermen and over 60,000 women and children of the fishing community is underway.
